Bob Murphy on the Uncertain Prospects for Liberty

(Students please use this scholarship application.)

The dominant themes in American politics are illiberal, as represented by the socialist Left and the alt-Right. Mainstream Democrats and Republicans lack answers or imagination. Our Middle East wars drag on, taxes and regulations never seem to get lighter, we ignore the looming entitlement crisis, while the Fed furiously works to put off the day of reckoning. People literally are fighting in the streets in places like Charlottesville and Berkeley. And the media has convinced us that growing political polarization and intractable culture wars are now permanent features of the American landscape.

What should libertarians make of this? How do we reassert ourselves, rejoin the national conversation, and take advantage of the public's disgust with politics as usual? How do we build on, or reclaim, the gains made during the Ron Paul Revolution? Is the battle political, cultural, social, or mostly educational? Should we support breakaway movements like the Free State Project, or insist that change be effected nationally, through Washington DC? What is the way forward for real liberalism? Bob and Jeff will tackle all of these strategic big-picture questions and more, with plenty of input from the audience.

Dr. Robert Murphy is a well-known economist, author, and speaker, as well as a professor with the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University and co-author of the Lara-Murphy Report. He also co-hosts the popular Contra Krugman podcast with Tom Woods. Jeff Deist is president of the Mises Institute.
