What Would Happen If a State Implemented Gold as Money???

What would happen if a state implemented the gold standard? More specifically, what kind of economic effects would take place? With a stable currency, wouldn't that invite more investment and growth? With increased demand from citizens, wouldn't this increase the purchasing power of gold and silver coins? Thanks
