Defending SUVs against O’Reilly

Car and Driver’s Brock Yates slams SUV critics like Fox’s Bill O’Reilly who “insist America’s transportation needs can be met by everyone toddling around in tiny subcompacts consuming eyedroplets of gasoline (or better yet, hydrogen or yogurt or cowpies, or whatever is the energy source du jour).” On the contrary, Yates observes, millions of people buy sport-utility vehicles because, as he puts it, “they find their utility of value.” Recalling the famous description of New York Mayor John Lindsay as a “limousine liberal,” Yates calls O’Reilly “a New York City elitist who wouldn’t know a good automobile if it ran over him in Times Square.”

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
